Product Description: DEVA Vegan Omega-3 DHA with Lycopene is the only liquid vegan product in the world that combines these two very important ingredients. DHA, also known as docohexaenoic acid, is an omega 3 essential fatty acid. Unlike fish oils on the market, the DHA DEVA uses comes from algae oil, which makes it a true vegan alternative. Eating foods rich in DHA has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering triglycerides. It also reduces serotonin levels in the body and has been implicated in the treatment of ADHD, Alzheimer`s, dementia and possibly depression.
DHA is the most prominent essential fatty acid in the brain and in the eye. With regard to DHA and the fetal brain in pregnancy, researchers found that infants born to mothers with higher blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA at delivery had advanced levels of attention spans well into their second year of life. During the first six months of life, these infants were two months ahead of those babies whose mothers had lower DHA levels.
This holds true for children as well. The DHA levels in children of the age of four are associated with Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test scores (Clinical Pediatrics. 47.2008). A functional MRI evaluation showed that after an 8 week supplementation of DHA at 1200 mg/day, there was an increased frontal brain activity noted during those doing a sustained attention task. (Clinical Pediatrics, 2800).
DHA supplementation has been found to improve triglycerides and the low density lipoprotein particle size in a group of people taking statins for lipids. (Journal of Clinical Lipidology 1.2008). Other studies indicate that DHA alone has many protective effects of the heart. (American Journal of Therapeutics, in press).
DHA has the biggest effect on the polyunsaturated fatty acids composition in the brain. Low levels of DHA in the body have been associated with a mental decline and causes neural cell death. DHA is found to be low in the brains of severely depressed individuals
DEVA`s Liquid DHA also contains lycopene, a red pigment and phytochemical that is found in high concentrations in tomatoes and other red fruits. Lycopene is one of the precursors to carotenoids like beta carotene. Lycopene has a high antioxidant activity. While not essential, we get lycopene from our foods primarily, especially in tomato paste. Lycopene has been considered a potent source for the prevention of several types of cancer, primarily prostate cancer.
Lycopene has antioxidant properties. Some observational studies suggest that foods containing lycopene may help prevent macular degeneration, cataracts, cardiovascular disease. It has been found to be helpful in reducing Tylenol-induced liver toxicity. Lycopene, as part of the Mediterranean diet has been found to reduce the incidence of colon cancer. Lycopene has also been found to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia, a dangerous complication of pregnancy.
Lycopene can come from natural or artifical sources. DEVA uses only the natural form of lycopene that is derived from tomatoes.
